Jewellery workshops

If you have ever had a hankering to make jewellery, either for yourself, loved ones, or to sell, this page is for you.

In personalised sessions in my garden studio, I take you through the basics of metal smithing, using either sterling silver or copper. You can also choose to incorporate enamelling if you wish. The one-day beginners course starts at 9.30 or 10.00 a.m. (depending on your choice) and runs until 4.30 or 5.00 p.m. (again according to your choice). There will be a lunch break. This is what the day will cover.

Please phone me to have a chat and discuss your project idea.

Workshop FAQ’s

  • I hold personalised sessions in my garden studio for up to two people in the same group.

  • I take you through the basics of metal smithing, using either sterling silver or copper. You can also choose to incorporate enamelling if you wish.

The day can also be designed to suit the learner. For instance I had two 13-year-old friends, Isabel and Laura (illustrated here) who came for a specially designed shorter session which didn’t involve anything involving the use of fire! They had great fun and made lots of pendants. The concentration was a sight to behold!

NOTE: I normally only take one student at a time as space is tight, however I was able to accommodate this particular request for two students because of the reduced hours and limited use of some of the more dangerous tools!

  • This is what the day will cover:

Health and safety in tool use

    Manipulating wire

    Making jump rings and clasps

Piercing (using a jeweller’s saw to produce metal shapes)

Forging, texturing, and drilling metal using various tools

    Forming (creating refinement in shapes)

    Soldering

    Cleaning and polishing

    Enamelling (optional)

    Simple casting methods (optional)

    Where to obtain supplies

Also included is up to an hour about a week before the date of your course day to discuss what you would like to make, so that the materials you will need can be available.

  • The one-day beginners course starts at 9.30 or 10.00 a.m. (depending on your choice) and runs until 4.30 or 5.00 p.m. (again according to your choice).

There will be a lunch break.

  • I supply you with plenty of tea/coffee/soft drinks, but please bring your own packed lunch.

  • All necessary tools and practice materials are provided.

  • The cost is £125 for an adult. Gift tokens can be purchased for either the full cost, or for any amount towards it, should someone want to gift you the day.

  • Courses take place from the end of March until the end of October because, although the studio has power and light, the maximum amount of natural light is best.

However, I run the course on a mutually convenient date arranged directly between me and the person who wishes to attend. They do not run on fixed, specified dates.
